Videos about the Fairfax County School Board

Boundary changes are on the way

Voices of Fairfax has been following the boundary issue, watching countless hours of school board videos and attending meetings.  We have been appalled at the lack of transparency and lack of focus on academics that we have seen.

This 4 minute summary will bring you up to speed and show you why the 2019 election is so important.

Academic excellence endangered in Fairfax

NYC's mayor hired a consultant who recommended scrapping G&T programs in order to create "equity" and engineer the programs' demographics. Fairfax is currently examining the demographics of AAP and preparing to begin "reforming TJ."

See what they've been saying at the School Board work sessions.

Why the sudden flip-flop on McLean High School's CIP amendment?

McLean High School is excessively overcrowded, and hasn't had a boundary study since 1994. In January 2019, Jane Strauss, Dranesville District board member, asked the School Board for a boundary study for McLean. She was was unequivocally denied and her question wasn't even brought to a vote.

Eight months later, in September-- with the public watching and November's election fast approaching -- all board members supported the study. But will the study and potential boundary changes mean what McLean thinks it will mean?  Will it result in McLean being guinea pig for for the board's new boundary policy - that will certainly be passed if the current members and their surrogates get elected?  Jane Strauss warns the board that residents of Dranesville have begun advocating for creative solutions to the McLean overcrowding (open enrollment) and that if they want McLean's future to fit into what the board has as a priority (racial and social equity, per One Fairfax and policy 8130.8), they should open the McLean boundary now for a study.

Howard County Redistricting Coming to Fairfax
Howard County, Maryland is facing imminent redistricting of more than 7,000 children in the name of "equity."  Just like in Fairfax, parents of many races, socio-economic, and political backgrounds are begging to stay in the schools they worked so hard to move into, and research shows that bussing children out of their neighborhood school to distribute them doesn't help the disadvantaged children they claim this is for.

Despite this, redistribution of children has been pushed on countless cities and counties across the nation. It happened in Wake County, NC; NY, NY; and is happening nearby in Howard County with a suspiciously similar timeline - only a few months ahead of us in this process.

Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, and Republicans are coming together to say "This is not right. The school board should be fulfilling their obligation to bring quality education and academic opportunities to ALL students at ALL schools."

Bussing is their Nuclear Option
The school board wants you to believe they are only working on a "comprehensive review." Sounds innocent right? Why wouldn't you review policy once in a while?  They aren't being honest with you. They want a "nuclear" option to "fix" Fairfax County. Do you think your neighborhood school needs to be "fixed" by bussing?

They are pushing a radical agenda that does not come from the needs of our county (no one is asking for this), but rather a network of activist groups working hard to push these policies justified by junk science. Research shows that bussing children out of their neighborhood school to distribute them doesn't help the disadvantaged children they claim this is for. Parents of many races, socio-economic, and political backgrounds are begging to stay in the schools they worked so hard to move into.  Keep politics out of schools - don't let this happen to Fairfax county!

Setting the Record Straight
Thur Sep 19, 2019 Superintendent Scott Brabrand emailed a video about the current boundary policy discussions to all FCPS across the county.   Both the email and the video are misleading and disingenuous.

During each of the four school board work sessions where policy 8130 has been discussed, both Brabrand and the school board members use the terms “One Fairfax”, “equity lens”, “One Fairfax equity lens”, and “socio-economic equity” many, many, many times.   Interestingly,  Brabrand does not mention any of these terms AT ALL in this memo or video.

The precipitating cause for this 8130 policy to be reviewed at all was the adoption of the One Fairfax policy in November 2017 by both the Board of Supervisors and the School Board.  “This joint policy commits both boards to consider equity in decision-making and in the development and delivery of future policies, programs, and services” (source: https://www.fcps.edu/onefairfax).

The fact that the superintendent felt the need to produce and send out a video/email that seemingly obfuscates the role that One Fairfax is playing in this discussion should be a cause for ALARM for us all.

We Fact Checked the FCSB Fact Sheet
According to slide 12 in the July 22, 2019 meeting agenda, a vote on the proposed policy changes was clearly planned for this September. Right before elections. Without a comprehensive review by the board. Without any community input.  After this video was released Aug 20, 2019, the school board did not put the policy changes to a vote and pretends that it was never planned.

The Truth About One Fairfax
One Fairfax "equity lens" has been the excuse and top priority of this board to change the boundary policy in preparation for county-wide boundary changes. Policy that gives them more power to move children without public vote (from 5% to 15%) and power to select which children move based on their income and race (see proposed changes here). The board refuses to help any overcrowded schools until they get their power and mock hard-working families for worrying about it. Since releasing this video Aug 1, 2019, the school board has backpedalled, avoiding the term "One Fairfax" (candidates are removing it from their websites), and are scrambling for votes by pretending to care about overcrowded schools with a last minute CIP amendment they vehemently opposed just last January. This board doesn't represent you. Vote in a new board Nov 5!
